My goal is to provide serious soccer referees with video clips and animations to help accelerate their development. (Almost) all of the clips have annotated versions.

Note: Most animations are still under development - it's a steep learning curve
Note: Not all clips have annotated or high definition versions available (yet)
Note: I recommend you expand your browser window to full screen

For general instructions on how to use the site, please see Help.

Please note: this site expects a high-speed internet connection and a "modern" monitor (at least 1280 pixels wide). I test "improvements" on a variety of browsers (IE9, IE11, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari) and with a variety of operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 8, and unix (Mint)). If you are having problems using any of the features on the site, please let me know (and provide information about your computer, operating system, and browser) at: peter.guthrie.ref@gmail.com

If you wish to provide a specific link (URL) to any of the clips in this website for the purposes of expanding the discussion to an online forum (e.g. SocRef-L), please contact me and let me know where you wish to post the URL; although clip-specific direct links are not readily obtained by browsing this website, I can provide a direct link to any specific clip upon request. (I have “special” powers here☺).

Conditions of Use (Long Version):

  1. Virtual-Soccer-Ref presents video clips and animations to illustrate interesting and thought-provoking, and sometimes funny, situations that can occur in soccer matches, with the goal of assisting in the education and growth of soccer referees. Many of the clips are limited extractions from copyrighted material under the Fair Use Doctrine of US Copyright Law. The materials are presented here for educational purposes and are not intended to be distributed for any other purpose. No copyright claim is asserted for any of the videos used on this website. Please contact me at: peter.guthrie.ref@gmail.com if you wish to download any of these clips for educational, or any other, use.
  2. The development of Virtual-Soccer-Ref has been stimulated by decades of “discussion” on the soccer referee discussion ListServ SocRef-L. However, Virtual-Soccer-Ref has no official connection with SocRef-L, and SocRef-L and its participants are not responsible for any content presented here - that dubious honor belongs solely to me.
  3. The descriptions of the clips and their interpretations within the context of The Laws of the Game are mine, based on my understanding of the current Laws of the Game and interpretations of those Laws. They are not to be considered as authoritative or representing the US Soccer Federation or FIFA. If you believe any interpretation is incorrect, please contact me at peter.guthrie.ref@gmail.com - sometimes it takes a “village” to generate the correct interpretation.
  4. The blogs associated with some clips are intended to provide a forum for discussion of those clips and their interpretation. Being solely responsible for the content on Virtual-Soccer-Ref, I reserve the right to delete blog comments that I consider offensive, insulting, or otherwise inappropriate for the goals of Virtual-Soccer-Ref. Please remember to focus on the actual events in the clip. If you wish to pursue variations on the situation presented in a clip, please do that in another forum (e.g. SocRef-L). Please, however, remember that the goal of Virtual-Soccer-Ref is to help develop soccer referees - any use of Virtual-Soccer-Ref, direct or indirect, or through another discussion site, must be focused on referee education.
  5. I have no commercial interest in any of the material presented on this website. I will never sell email addresses or other contact information from the users. I have no expectation of making money from this website. My only goal is to help educate soccer referees - success in that arena is the only compensation I hope for.
